Custom Milled Log Technique • All premium custom sawed heavy timbers Square houses have comparable characteristics as log houses but has a different aesthetic. It is the traditional construction of the region. The first settlers built a square cottage in one piece without any windows. Many among them had a great knowledge about woodworking. The logs were laboriously gathered. The log pieces fit together like dovetails in the corners. Lime and sand mortar were used to fill up the holes between the logs. A floor put directly on the ground gave a little comfort and insulated against the cold and humidity. This first house was enlarged with the years. As soon as the settler gets richer, he built a new house more comfortable and bigger and the first house became a barn or a cowshed. Many houses from that period still exist but they are recovered by siding. |
